City of Grand Forks Declares State of Local Emergency
The City of Grand Forks has declared a local state of emergency due to increased flooding. The State of Local Emergency will remain in place for the next seven days.
A State of Local Emergency is declared by local government when an emergency — such as the expected severe flooding in the Boundary — requires coordination of rapid response or evacuation of people from their home or property to protect their health, safety or welfare or to limit property damage.
Sixteen properties in the Johnston’s Flats area within City limits have now been ordered evacuated. A further 17 properties in Electoral Area D/Rural Grand Forks have also been ordered evacuated.
Rain in the last 24 hours and continuing showers in the coming days means river will continue to rise. Evacuation orders and alerts are in place because water levels in creeks, rivers and lakes are expected to peak in the next 24 to 36 hours.
