Background
On June 17, 2021, the Province established the Accessible British Columbia Act (the “Act”) with the regulations coming into effect as of September 1, 2022. Based on these regulations, the City must comply by September 1, 2023.
Part 3 of the Act outlines the responsibilities for organizations including the City regarding accessibility.
On a high level, 3 items are required by the City by the September 1, 2023 deadline:
1. An accessibility committee
2. An accessibility plan
3. A tool to receive feedback on accessibility
A report to Council was presented at the April 17, 2023 Committee of the Whole meeting to review and discuss the Terms of Reference for the Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC). The report was then presented and approved at the May 8, 2023 Regular Meeting. The AAC Committee was established on September 1, 2023.
Committee Members: Councillor Christine Thompson, Dylan Zorn, Christine-Ann Fisher, Melissa Markin, Jennifer Messier, Andrea Zibin, Peter Beliveau and Deputy Corporate Officer Kelly Deinstadt.
Public engagement sessions are planned to take place in 2026 for further public feedback opportunities.
